Best Air Purifier For Baby Room

Probably the most important accessory parents will want to buy today is an air purifier for your baby. Sure, we all have fun choosing the theme for the nursery – the colors, the crib, the fluffy blankies – but health-conscious parents know that giving their baby a healthy start in life will have benefits that will last a lifetime. While politicians argue about climate change and environmental issues, we parents can see for ourselves that the air around is getting more and more polluted. Smoke from wild fires, airborne contaminates from cars and industry have frequently made our air hazardous to breathe in recent years. Even homes that are toowell build can create harmful indoor air due to lack of proper circulation. Parents need to consider the well-being of their infants and toddlers to get them off to a good, healthy start in life.

For those of you who are already parents, or who are considering exploring the joys of parenthood, Moon River has done the research for you. Please let us help you chose the best air purifier for your baby’s room. We’ll share our top picks (which will include a product review, a “pro’s and con’s” comparison chart as a quick reference guide) and our recommendations to help you find an air purifier that will work  best in the nursery, in your child’s room – wherever it is needed.  This is an important decision, so we have done our best to make this process as simple as possible for you.

First: A Couple of Heath Considerations

It is a sad reality that our air is becoming more and more polluted, and it is more important than ever that we give our children the best chance for a healthy life. The best time to guarantee that your son or daughter will have a strong, healthy lungs is when they are infants. Clean air at the start will lead to a life of good health for your child, with fewer illness and less chance of developing asthma or allergies.

No matter how clean your home is, all kinds of nasty pollutants are present – even in your indoor air. Dust, mold, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, off-gassing from furniture and building materials – all of these man-made and nature-made pollutants can damage your newborn’s immune system. That is why it is more important than ever find the best air purifiers for your babies and toddlers. It’s not something you really want to think about in your last few weeks before maternity leave, but these days it is essential.

Your baby’s healthy lungs will lead to a life of good health. Conversely, the lack of a healthy baby room can lead  to a life of asthma attacks, inhalers, and allergy pills.

Assessing your needs

Mom and Dad – you will want to make a quick needs-assessment when looking for the best air purifier for your baby or child. Do you need a purifier for just the nursery? Do you want an air purifier for your child’s room, or for the whole house? If you are looking for something for your toddler’s room – do you need the same level of purification? After all, even though we want the best air possible for our children, we still need them to build up their immunities by letting them get exposed to somecontaminates. And what about the noise level? (Note: no matter what your Mom or your friends say, babies don’t mind noise. They lived in a verynoisy environment for nine months. Toddlers, on the other hand…..) We hope our parent-friendly reviews will make these important decisions a lot less complicated for you..

Top 8 Best Air Purifiers For Babies In 2018

Quick Summary

Winix 5300-2 Review

Rated by: Stacy

Winix’s PlasmaWave Series 5300 is one of the most technologically advanced units you will find when you are looking for the best air purifiers for babies. It combines the efficiency of a True HEPA filter with a carbon pre-filter (to eliminate odors and off-gassing) and PlasmaWave technology to zap all the harmful pollutants, eliminating them completely. Think of it as a seek-and- destroy mission for the nursery – or for any other room in your house where you need clean air.

I like this unit especially because it has an Air-Quality sensor to warn you about airborne pollutants in your baby’s room. With all the recent wildfires that have been happening, and large parts of the US and Canada, this feature is essential when you are dealing with regional hazardous air quality alerts.

Of course the Winix PlasmaWave  works on all pollutants and allergens, filtering out dust, pet dander, pollen, mold (yuck), germs and bacteria (double yuck) and nasty odors. And, of course, smoke.

If your infant or toddler has allergies or asthma, or is prone to respiratory infections, then you will really appreciate the PlasmaWave technology in the Winix PlasmaWave air purifier unit. The carbon pre-filter removes odors, the True HEPA filter grabs almost all the pollutants in your child’s room (99.97%) but the PlasmaWave actually attacks allergens, pollutants, odors and chemical vapors at a molecularlevel. The PlasmaWave actually safely breaks apart these harmful airborne contaminants, so that they are no longer in your home. They are dead – and, in the case of purified air, dead is better than filtered and re-circulated air. Why re-circulate pollutants when you can eliminate them completely?

We all want the best air quality and the healthiest environment for our children, and we certainly want clean air for our newborns. Clean, breathable air can mean the difference between a life of allergies and asthma, and a life of good health and a strong immune system. The Winix Plasma Wave WA C5300is expensive, running around $999, but if your child has breathing and health issues, or you want to give your baby the very best start in life, it is worth the price.

Here is a quick summary for people who just want the stats:

The Winix 5300 Air Purifier measures 14.9 x 7.8 x 23.6 inches and weighs 18 pounds. It will clean an area up to 350 square feet. It removes 99.97% of contaminates in the room, down to 0.3 microns.  It has a sleep mode setting for quiet nighttime operation - otherwise it operates at a quiet 27.8 decibels. It is Energy Star certified.  It will remove allergens from the air, like dust, dust-mite debris, mold spores, pet dander and pollen, and it also removes, cigarette smoke, odors, and organic chemicals, bacteria, and will also capturemost viruses.

Quick Summary

I believe this is by far the best product for babies

Rated by: Stacy

The Rabbit Air Minus A2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier may be the absolute “best of the best” air purifiers for babies (and for the entire family). It features a six phase air purification and deodorizing system, and has a BioGS HEPA filter. This specialized HEPA filter  which not only traps nearly all the common allergens and pollutants in your home, but also has a long self-life – meaning: less changing of filters and  less cost and worry to you. It covers a room up to 815 sq. ft, which means it does not have to be confined to the nursery or your child’s room. But, best of all, the unit is designed to stand alone or to be hung on the wall! How cool is that?

For a parent with a toddler or small children, this is absolutely amazing. No more  worrying about your child bumping into a floor unit, or pulling the air purifier off the shelf…or being able to play with the unit (note to expectant parents: all toddlers and little kids like to push every button and flip every switch all the time).

Filtering System:

Here is a quick rundown of the filtering system, just because it is so impressive.

  • Pre filter: Grabs large pollutants. It’s washable (yay) permanent (also yay – saves money) and easy to remove and replace.
  • Medium filter: Traps airborne contaminants larger than 1 micron (i.e.: mold, pollen, pet dander). Helps extend life of HEPA filter
  • BioGS HEPA filter: Traps airborne contaminants and pollutants as small as 0.3 microns (i.e. .germs and viruses) removing up to 99.97% of nasty stuff from the air.
  •  Customized filter: Youget to choose. Options include “Germ Defense, Pet Allergy, Odor Remover, or Toxin Absorber”.
  • Activated Carbon filter: for nasty odors and off-gassing (and smoke).
  • Negative Ion Generator: Not actually a filter but it releases negative ions and freshens the air.

These filter all work together to both guarantee the best indoor air, but also save you money. No need to replace the filters so often (and those puppies can be expensive). This interconnect system also reduce the buildup of pollutants (like dust mites, mold, pollen and pet dander), reduce the growth of bacteria and/or viruses on the filter, and keep the HEPA filter working to optimal efficiency. It’s just a really great and healthy system that ensures a really clean home.

I think the feature that I like the best is that this is a stylish, unobtrusive unit that can be mounted on the wall. It looks very much like a flat screen TV, not like some ugly appliance that is obviously an air purifier. You can leave it in the nursery, or hang it in the living room for added asthma and allergy protection for your infant or for the entire family. And you can choose a customized filter that will best suit the health needs or your family. It is a bit on the pricy side, with a starting price of $549.95, but if you have looked at the price of replacement HEPA filters (and the lack of warranties for many units) you can see how economical the Rabbit Air Minus A2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Ari Purifier really is the best choice for your family’s good health.

Here is a quick summary for people who just want the stats:

The Rabbit Air Minus A2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Ari Purifier Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover HPA300 measures 24 x 23 x 10 inches and weighs 23.9 pounds. It has an Energy Star rated motor, and it cycles 2 times an hour. It will remove allergens from the air, like pollen, mold, and pet dander.  Customized filters can also be purchased for the unit which includes “Germ Defense”, “Pet Allergy”, “Odor Remover”, or “Toxin Absorber”.

Review of the AIRMEGA 300S

Rated by: Stacy

The Airmega 300S - aka “The Smarter App Enabled Air Purifier”- really deserves more than a once-over in your search for the best air purifiers for babies– and the rest of your family.

The Airmega 300S is a stand-alone unit that weighs 27 lbs., so it is not something that you are going to move from room to room to purity the air. It is a whole house unit that can purify air up to 1256 sq. and it can be controlled remotely through an IOS or Android app. The app will even work with Amazon’s Alexa, and you can use the Amazon Dash Replenishment system to make sure you never run out of filters or needed supplies.

The Airmega 300s looks a lot like a space heater, but is also stylish and inconspicuous, so you don’t have to worry about it clashing with your furnishing. It cleans 99.97% of pollutants, allergens, viruses, germs and odors from you home.It has a washable pre-filter, which save you money and will help you in your battle for clean air for your family. It also has The Max2 filter, which is a combinedcarbon filter and TRUE HEPA filter. These two filters together capture any particles in the air (down to 0.3 microns) and eliminates cooking or nursery odors. And it is quiet.

One thing I really like about the Airmega 300S is that it has an indoor/outdoor air monitor. If your child (or anyone in your family) has sensitive lungs, asthma, or allergies, knowing what’s going on outside can be lifesaving. It is a sad truth that in this era of increased air pollution and massive fires, the air quality is often hazardous for “sensitive groups.” And the ability to turn on the unit from your cell phone on the way home, so the air is cleaned when you get there,  is absolutely invaluable. (Ok – that’s two things. My bad)

Here is a quick summary for people who just want the stats:

The Airmega 300S   measures 13.6 x 13.6 x 21.2 inches and weighs 21.4 pounds. It will clean an area up to 1256 square feet (i.e. the whole house). It removes 99.97% of contaminates in the room, down to 0.3 microns.  It has a sleep mode setting but is generally very quiet (note: most reviewers make very positive comments about the quiet operation of the unit).  Minimum decibels: 28 dB. Maximum decibels 52 dB (that’s not very loud). It uses 57 watts of power and is not Energy Star certified. It moves 340 CFM of air, cycling two times an hour. It will remove common allergens such as pollen and fungi, as well as cigarette odor, food smells, harmful gasses, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by common household products.

PROS

  • Real-time air quality monitor
  • Change filter alerts
  • Scheduler
  • Smart mode operation and built in scheduler
  • Cleans up to 1256 sq. ft. (so it is a whole house unit)
  • Conway IoCare mobile app (iOS and Android).

CONS

  • Pre-filter must be kept clean for maximum efficiency
  • times-circle
    Unit is large and boxy
  • times-circle
Not easily moved and may take up a lot of room in a small apartment or condo.

Conclusion:

I hope this review has been helpful and has given you all the information you need to make a decision about which air purifier is best for your baby and for your family. In the end, it all comes down to the clean air requirements of your family and the issues you are trying to addres:.

  • Do you need a whole- house air purifier because of allergies or poor air quality where you live – something that works quickly and is tamper-resistant? Then you probably should consider the larger, more powerful units like the Vornadobaby Purio Nursery True HEPA Air Purifier, the Rabbit Air Minus A2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier, the Airmega 300S or the Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover HPA300.  All of these are large, powerful, child-resistant and some can even be programmed remotely.
  • Do you need a smaller, quieter unit just for the nursery or your child’s room – one that is guaranteed to trap all the germs and allergens? Then the Fellowes AeraMax Baby DB55 Ultra Quiet Baby Room Air Purifieror the PureZone Elite Ultra-Quiet 4-in-1 True HEPA Air Purifier would be great choices.
  • Do you need something that can travel with you? Does your infant or toddler need clean, purified air at all times? Are there health issues like allergies or asthma that present a serious health risk to your child? If so then the Wynd Air Purifierwould probably be the perfect choice – especially when you are anywhere outside of the home or nursery.
  • Do you want a unit that is super-quiet? Once again- you should consider that quiet is not always necessary for infants, who are used to a very noisy environment, and that a little white noise will  actually help them sleep. So a nice little hum might be just what the doctor ordered – no pun intended. But if your infant is a very light sleeper, or the noise will keep you or your toddler awake (because your room is right next door) then you should look at the one of the “ultra-quiet” units.
  • Do you only need one air purifier for your baby? Maybe you need more than one to address the good health of your child. Winix’s PlasmaWave Series 5300is the top of the line with its’ Plasma germ zapper, but it certainly can’t travel with you. Maybe you need the Winix 5300 for your home and the Wyndfor everyplace else you need to go.

In the end, as the parent, you will need to make the best health choices for your family. Parenthood gives us so many things to worry about, and the quality of the air your child breaths should not be one of them. Unfortunately, nowadays,  it is. I hope we have given you enough information to make informed decisions about the health of your family so that you can choose the best air purifier for your baby.
